MANAGING CHRONIC ILLNESS AT HOME

Coping and living with a chronic illness can be very challenging, especially for the elderly. Still, there are quite a few strategies that can help anyone dealing with a chronic disease cope effectively. Here are some practical steps for managing chronic disease at home:

·       Learn more about one’s condition: You can do this through self-management and educational programs. These programs can empower you to manage symptoms, improve habits, and reduce stress. One can also explore resources specific to one’s chronic illness.

·       Diet: Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet that includes lean protein, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds is a significant way of managing symptoms of a chronic illness. Avoiding processed foods and snacks high in sugar, salt, and fat will go a long way in reducing the effects of the disease. Reducing sodium in one’s diet can also help manage high blood pressure.

·       Exercise: Getting at least 2 to 3 hours of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week goes a long way in managing one’s chronic illness at home. Physical activity can help manage pain, improve your mood, and help you lose weight. You can speak with your doctor or physiotherapist about exercises that may help your condition.

·       Quality sleep: For someone managing a chronic illness, getting 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night is a good way of managing it. One should also avoid napping during the day, excessive bed rest, and the consumption of stimulants like caffeine before bed should be avoided.

·       Treatment plan: Sticking to your treatment plan and taking your medications as prescribed is imperative. If the treatment plan includes monitoring one’s health at home, i.e., checking your blood sugar or blood pressure, stay on schedule and contact your doctor if anything looks wrong.

·       Emotional support: Many people with chronic illness struggle with depression, so it's important to get emotional support from family, friends, and loved ones. Having some emotional support from loved ones can have a lasting effect on you.

Remember, you’re not alone; many folks face similar challenges. Seeking professional help and connecting with others can make a significant difference in managing chronic illness at home.
